Book Club: Ender’s Game

Please join us at Jennifer Cox’s home (2625 Lindenwood Drive) for May’s book club meeting to “discuss” Orson Scott Card novel, Ender’s Game. Even if (or perhaps especially if) the last thing you read was Good Night Moon, please come for the laughter, food and drinks. I know this has been written often, but if you don’t have time to read the book please come anyway. Reading the book may be an easy way to create a common connection, but forming friendships certainly doesn’t involve required reading.

We will meet at the aviary, located on the North Side (near the Children’s Museum), at 10:00 for a guided tour. Be sure to pack a lunch to give you plenty of time of explore all the aviary has to offer.

RSVP here by Friday, May 15th to secure your family’s spot. You will not be considered RSVP’d until we receive your payment (checks payable to USC Newcomer’s Club and send to Sydna).

See you there!

Ladies Day Out: ‘Burgh Bits and Bites Tour of The Strip

logo

From Bits and Bites website: “Smoke hangs in the air along Smallman Street in the Strip District. Yet unlike a century ago when it was the numerous factories and mills along the rivers belching smog into the atmosphere, today it’s the bakeries, coffee shops and eateries emitting fragrant wafts to tempt passers-by.”

Our private Newcomers Club discounted tasting tour of The Strip District Market tour will start at 10am and end about noon. Our walking tour will cover several blocks of historic Penn Ave, with stops to meet merchants and taste samples from around the world including Italian pastries, Mediterranean and Polish specialties, European meats and French bread.

Those who wish to shop after tour’s end should note so in their RSVPS…those who need to return to USC right away should also note that in their RSVPS and hopefully we can organize two car pools: cars who return immediately and cars that stay longer in the Strip. Bring a chill/bag or cooler for your perishables!

Weather: Tour takes place rain or shine
Dress: Wear comfortable shoes and clothing
Food: We taste on the go
Included: Tastings served on tour and bottled water provided

Ladies Day Out at Gilfillan Farm

Maybe you’ve been on the walking trail that circles the property, or seen the dressed scarecrows among the fields of crops while driving on Route 19, but have you seen inside the 1850′s Gilfillan farmhouse furnished with antiques, its outdoor kitchen, large barn, carriage house with 19th century sleighs and buggy, natural spring, stagecoach outhouse and more?

It’s TAX DAY and the anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination so we’ll pause in the library to look at the newspaper edition headlining his death, and mourn the loss of our income to taxes, too.

Bring a brown bag lunch and a beverage. Bring a $5 donation to the Historical Society of Upper St. Clair (unless you are a member already then it’s free) for the private tour of the Gilfillan Farm offered by descendants of the original owner.
For newcomers or old-timers, this private tour is a unique historical and cultural experience. The restored home and buildings are great local treasure. For more info, see www.hsusc.org

Please RSVP on website by Monday, April 13th. Parking information and more tour details will be sent to you after you RSVP.
