May Book Club: One Plus One

Please join us on Tuesday, May 23, at 7:30, at Megan Watson’s home (1812 Tyburn Lane) for May’s book club meeting to discuss Jojo Moyes’s novel One Plus One. Even if (or perhaps especially if) the last thing you read was Good Night, Moon, please come for the laughter, food and drinks. I know this has been written often, but if you don’t have time to read the book please come anyway. Reading the book may be an easy way to create a common connection, but forming friendships certainly doesn’t involve required reading.

In April we will shop til we drop, or until the stores close!  We’re going to Tanger Outlets in Washington.  Let’s meet at H&M – it’s a big corner store – at 5:30.  We can shop for all our Easter needs and even some spring wishes at places like Nike, Old Navy, Carters, Coach, Gap, Off Fifth Ave, and about half a dozen shoe stores!  Check out www.tangeroutlet.com/pittsburgh to learn more. We can even stop off at Sarris Candies if there’s time – they are open until 9 -for some chocolate and ice cream. Hope to see you then!

Bunco Night in April

Wednesday, April 5, 7:00 PM

Our inaugural meeting of the  Babes of Bunco, USC Newcomers Club, was lots of fun, as maybe you heard if you weren’t there. The plan is to play on the first Wednesday of every month, so our next meeting will be April 5 at 7:00 p.m. at Frances Scher’s home (1025 Tall Trees Dr.). Bring a snack to share and $5 so we can offer cash prizes to four lucky winners! If you can’t make it every time, we can use subs from time to time. No experience required! We will explain the rules each time. Just a fun, get-to-know you type of dice game for ladies only. You’ll be glad you came!

Why did you want to join the USC Newcomers’ Club?
Well, we don’t know anyone here, and I work from home, so after one too many (decidedly one-sided) conversations with my dog, I figured I should probably try and make some friends.

Where did you recently move from?
We moved here from Connecticut.

Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Washington, DC. My husband Ric and I met in DC and moved to Connecticut ten years ago for his job.

Where did you go to college and what did you study?
I went to the University of Wisconsin for undergrad and majored in Political Science and French. Then, (reference aforementioned majors and chances of related employment) I went to law school at GW.

What do you do for your day job?
I work remotely for a Hartford-based law firm as the Director of Legal Recruiting.

Do you have any kids? If so what are their names and ages?
I have ten-year-old boy/girl twins – Lauren and JD.

What do you like to do for fun?
I like to read, cook, go out to restaurants, travel, and spend time with my family (not necessarily in that order…)

What books on your shelf are begging to be read?
I read a lot, so there’s rarely something I’m waiting to read. I am currently re-reading All the Light We Cannot See – I forgot how good of a book that is.

What’s the biggest goal you are working on now?
Obtaining tickets to Hamilton. I am obsessed with the cast recording and am dying to see it live.

What upcoming Newcomers’ event are you looking forward to attending?I am definitely looking forward to book club and bunco.

What other things do you want your fellow newcomers to know about yourself? To those of you who read all this way, I thank you. We didn’t really know much about Pittsburgh when we moved here, and we look forward to getting to know the area better.

Bunco Night

The Newcomers are building a bunco group. We will meet once a month on the first Wednesday of the month in a round robin host.

Our first game will be Wednesday, March 1, at 7 p.m. at Eva Yager’s home (149 Warwick Drive). Bring a snack to share and $5 so we can offer cash prizes to four lucky winners! If you can’t make it every time, we can use subs from time to time. No experience required! We will explain the rules each time. Just a fun, get-to-know you type of dice game for ladies only. You’ll be glad you came!

Family Event @ Pizzaz Pizza

No idea what to cook for dinner? No problem! We’ve taken care of planning dinner for you and the family!
Family dinner at Pizzaz Italian Restaurant on Thursday, February 23, at 6:00 pm. There’s plenty of room for us to spread out, catch up with friends, and of course, eat some delicious food.
We’ve reserved space for us to eat dinner together, and just need to know how many to plan for. Families are responsible for their dinner charges.
